It gives a good taste of the Mercy Kilpatrick series and its fabulous characters. I haven’t read any other books in the Columbia River series and didn’t feel as though I needed to for this one – I only grabbed it for the Kilpatrick factor. For fans of Mercy and Truman, you’ll love catching up with the town and its characters, including a good dose of Ollie and Kaylie who are now living as a family with the aforementioned couple. I really enjoyed it. As always, the writing was solid and well-researched and I felt as though I was there with Mercy as she followed the clues through the small-town countryside she knows like the back of her hand. Mercy and Truman continue to be two of my all-time favorite characters in this genre and In The Pines reminded me why. I love the little quirks and characteristics the author has given to their characters that make the reader feel as though they know them without being over the top or repetitive. Add to that, there was plenty of suspense, a good dash of danger, and a lot of me trying to figure out what was going on.

The dunnit and ending will be pretty predictable (and maybe overly convenient) for some readers, but I was so happy to have another book on Mercy and Truman that I wasn’t inclined to take any stars off. The author chucked a little acknowledgment at the end that said more Mercy and Truman will be coming and this made me squeal like a teenage girl. I already can’t wait because I love this world and its characters. It was another satisfying read for me by this author.
