These characters stole my heart and this story was bittersweet in the end…leaving tears in my eyes.

Book 2 ventured into territories that I initially wasn’t prepared for…namely a second romantic storyline featuring Prince Elm and Ione.

As everything progressed, I began to appreciate this change up and eventually, we came back full circle to our beloved Elspeth.

Ione became dear to me. I had absolutely no idea what she had been going through and I felt my heart shatter for her. Even the Nightmare earned my acceptance.

The twist in the plotline is one I should’ve seen coming but I think I’d been too wrapped up in their journey to have figured it out.

So let’s talk about a few of my favorite parts:

Elspeth drowning in the dark waters of her mind. This whole scenario was such a cinematic moment. She was trapped in her own mind, her body not her own but with the Nightmare as her anchor, reaching out to pull her back “One day you will be nothing more than memory Elspeth Spindle. But not yet.”

Their journey into the deep, mist filled woods, in search of the Spirit and the Twin Alders card was anything but easy. Instead it was tragic and fraught with pain and sacrifice,
“Those here that enter are neither wary, clever nor good. You know nothing of hell – till you’ve crossed the alderwood.”

And let’s not forget about this absolutely amazing magic system. I loved the intricate details and how it’s a thing of consequence and has laws of balance.

“Magic sways, like salt water on a tide. I believe the spirit is the moon, commanding the tide. She pulls us in, but also sets us free. She is neither good nor evil. She is magic – balance. Eternal.”

I found the Spirit to be such an interesting and complex creature. Waiting the span of both books to finally come face to face with her was definitely worth the wait. I absolutely love that even after, she’s still an enigma. Her power and motivations still not clear, as creatures of that magnitude would undoubtedly be.

And how better but to end full circle with a tale retold?

“There once was a girl, clever and good, who tarried in shadow in the depths of the wood. There also was a king, a shepherd by his crook, who reigned over magic and wrote the old book. The two were together, so the two were the same. The girl, the king and the monster they became.”
