Description
Before We Say Goodbye by Toshikazu Kawaguchi
This fourth installment, “Before we Say Goodbye,” in Toshikazu Kawaguchi’s time travelling series at the Tokita family’s coffee shops is as endearing as the previous three: “Before the Coffee Gets Cold,” “Tales from the Cafe,” and “Before Your Memory Fades.” I strongly recommend you read them in order. Although the “rules” for the brief time travel are explained in each of the books, no book does it better than the first. In this most recent book, four brave persons take the plunge to have one brief visit (no longer than it takes for your coffee to get cold) with someone with whom they were in the coffee shop in the past. Each person inevitably has some regret they want to remedy, but it takes some courage, because if they don’t meet the time limit, they will be reduced to a ghost who must remain in the cafe until the next unlucky person goes over the limit. Some debate if the risk is worth the reward, because one of the primary rules is that the present will not change by a trip to the past. Each of the four vignettes in this novel is particularly poignant, and a new facet of the effects of the time travel is revealed. I want to describe it here, but it is such a gamechanger that I feel it would be a spoiler, which I want each reader to discover for himself. I found it very heartwarming.
