Description
Nightfall by Penelope Douglas
This book is part of a series. While it can be read as a stand-alone, it is better to read the entire series in order.
I absolutely devoured this book in less than 2 days. The author wrote this in dual perspective, but also from different points in a timeline; either when the two were in high school or some other point in time over a nine year period. This made the book beautifully written, gave the reader a better understanding of their relationship, but also provided some relief from some very heartbreaking moments.
Emory is the MFC. She is a poor kid in a prestigious high school in Thunder Bay, a small New England town. She is an orphan who is being raised by her brother, who is 8 years older than her and caring for their ailing grandmother. Will is her suitor, the MMC, who is from one of the super wealthy families in town, attending the same high school.
Emory has serious trust issues with everyone due to a home issue, which leaves her unable to reach out to others for help and feeling increasingly isolated. Wil is part of a friend group called the Horsemen and is somewhat obsessed with Emory, and he wants her to be his. Often, she asks why, and he always says, “we want what we want.”
Nine years after HS is the present time frame. Emory is working in San Francisco as an architect. She is abducted and finds herself Black church, a place where wealthy families park their sons when they have gone so far that they need to be imprisoned quietly to save the family from public embarrassment. Emory wakes up in a seriously dangerous environment, dealing with men who have been kept from women for up to years and trying to find a way out. To her shock, Wil is there as well, and he has plenty of reasons to want revenge.
This book is spicy with WM, MM, and WW encounters. The books is mid-level dark, so not as dark as Lauren Biel books, but this is not Colleen Hoover either. It includes forced proximity, second chance, and enemies to lovers Tropes. She has a trigger warning list, and it is recommended you pay attention to it.
The book is absolutely deliciously wonderful to read. It is probably one of the best books I’ve read this year. I highly recommend it.
